  • SEASONAL NOTE

We have entered the wonderful Holiday season with special times for faith, family and friends. We want this to be a very special season for everyone.

You know we are here to help. Please do not hesitate to call.

    Have a WONDERFUL HOLIDAY SEASON

INFECTIONS: Don’t forget about the flu shot and the pneumonia shot (Pneumovax and Prevnar 13). Please check that you have all of your medications and you have your action plan so this can be a healthy season.

EYES: The eye drops and antihistamines can help eye symptoms, including watery eyes and itching.

SKIN: Moisturization with lotions and creams is very important for the skin due to the dry fall/winter air. Topical steroid lotions may also be needed.

ASTHMA / COUGH: With the barometric pressure changes, weather changes, and environmental changes, this can be a challengint time for your lungs. We want to avoid exacerbations. Please make sure you know what your best peak flow is, and follow up for any symptoms of cough, wheeze or chest tightness. Inhaled steroids can help heal the lungs, and albuterol (Ventolin, Proventil, Proair) can be used to open the lungs as a rescue inhaler on an as needed basis, or help with sports if used beforehand. Have your spacer available as needed, and remember to brush your teeth after using inhaled medications—Don’t wear meds! The combination medications (Symbicort, Dulera, and Advair), Spiriva, Montelukast, and the nebulized medications (Xopenex,/albuterol or Brovana/Performist and Budesonide) can have a very important role for lung stability and maintenance. The nebulizer delivers the same medications as the inhaler medications, so don’t double up—use one or the other on a 12 hr basis.

NASAL CONGESTION / SINUSES: Environmental control measures are so important. Use covers on your mattress, box spring, and pillows, wash bedding weekly in hot water, and keep the environment as dust-free as possible. Be prepared with your antihistamines (Allegra, Claritin) and the nasal sprays--nasal saline, nasal steroids (by prescription or over the counter), plus nasal antihistamines, which are only available by prescription.
